Knowing history of Hainan's Li & Miao minorities at Hainan Provincial Museum

Hainan Provincial Museum was established in 1984 and relocated to Hainan Cultural Park at Guoxing Avenue, Haikou in 2008. It is adjacent to the Provincial Library and Provincial Arts and Culture Centre, all housed in magnificent new buildings. The construction of the museum commenced at the end of 2005, taking up an area of more than 60 mu/mou (In modern China, the mu is reckoned to be exactly 1/15 hectare, ~ 667 sq m or 797 sq yd).

The first phase of the construction was 18,000 square metres in area, including 10 exhibition halls. With a collection of more than 2 million pieces of cultural relics, mainly of Xisha artefacts recovered from underwater, the historical relics of the Li and Miao ethnic minorities and the local cultural relics of Hainan are available for display.

The minorities of Hainan mainly inhabit the Central and Southern areas of Hainan Island. With a population of over 1.4 million, the Li, Miao and Hui nationalities have been living on Hainan Island for thousands of years. This museum outlines the history of these incredible people, the struggles the hardships as well as their amazing success in developing Hainan and its extraordinary culture.

With a diverse collection, the museum holds over 2 million historical artifacts. Including a variety of pieces from the Li, Miao and Hui people, the museum documents the development of the Island from the beginning of human inhabitation right through to the modern day. One of the largest and most comprehensive museums on the Island, it is an excellent opportunity to see the diverse history and culture of the island.
