Adventure race hitting city next week
TIME: 09:49AM Monday September 28,2009

Anyone looking for adventure won’t even need to head out on the highway.

A wild adventure will be brought right into the city on Oct. 4 as the annual Cycle Solutions Adventure Race takes place, beginning at 9 a.m. at the shop on West Street.

In what is basically a day-long treasure hunt for adults, teams — four-person teams consisting of mixed, all female or all male and three-person teams of any mix — will be provided with a map and will then proceed on an approximately eight-hour trek involving map and compass, hiking, mountain biking and different skill-testing activities which will cover terrain all around Corner Brook as specific checkpoints need to be located.

This is the sixth year for the race, which has no age limit and usually draws a more eclectic mix than typical mountain bike or running events.

“It’s for all sorts of different people,” said organizer Peter Ollerhead. “It’s not like a technical sport, but it is very challenging. Out of all the events we do during the year, this is probably the most rewarding physically and mentally when you finish it ... and it’s the most fun.

“When you see people do a bike race they just look like they’re in pain the whole time,” he added. “When you do this, there’s a lot of laughing and a lot of fun. It’s an enjoyable event.” Two courses will be available to try, a novice course which is about 40-km and the usual advanced course at 60-km.

“Most people will probably do the advanced course,” said Ollerhead. “The novice course will be a few shorter checkpoints. They won’t have to do the whole course, so it’s just for people to get a feel for what it’s all about.”

Ollerhead has been involved in this type of activity for years and said teamwork goes a long way towards success. “It comes down to decision-making, team effort and your orientation with a map and compass,” he said. “Making the right decisions will get you to the right place. The biggest thing that can make teams go wrong is when they can’t work together or they get tired and make bad decisions.”

Pre-registration for the event is required and can be done at Cycle Solutions until Oct. 2.
