Czerwinski: Expo is all things outdoors
TIME: 05:13PM Thursday September 13,2012
FROM:northjersey.com

If you’re interested in learning more about outdoor sports such as fishing and hunting, there’s no time like this weekend.

The New Jersey WILD Outdoor Expo, an annual celebration of the state’s bountiful natural resources and rich outdoor heritage, will take place Saturday and Sunday at Colliers Mills Wildlife Management Area in Jackson Township. The event, which runs from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. each day, is free and goes on rain or shine.

If you hunt or fish or participate in an outdoor sport, this is another opportunity to take advantage of the mild weather and revel in what you like to do best. And the best part is that there should be something for the entire family, so make a day of it.

The goal of the Expo is to provide a unique blend of conservation information, education and hands-on opportunities to learn outdoor skills and activities. You can learn about or try fishing, hiking, shooting sports, kayaking, camping skills, rock climbing and wildlife watching.

There will be fishing opportunities specifically for children and casting clinics for adults. If you need to take your hunter education class, you can do it at the Expo by preregistering at nj.wildlifelicense.com/start.php.

There will be family camping and cooking demonstrations, crafts and wildlife exhibits, and the always popular flea market featuring outdoor supplies. You can pack a lunch, but there will be food vendors on hand.

A reader told me that the archery trick-shooting performance Saturday is a must-see, and the turkey calling/hunting seminars always are worth the trip. There also will be sporting dog demonstrations that promise to be entertaining.

And don’t forget the educational side to this event, including a historical reenactment and camping demonstration focusing on life in the 18th and 19th centuries.

You can find a full schedule of events, the Expo brochure and directions to Colliers Mills WMA by logging on to njfishandwildlife. com/expo.htm and following the links in the middle of the page. There’s a video and some photos from past years on the bottom of the page to help you get a better feel for what the Expo is all about.

THINGS TO DO: Don’t forget the Knee Deep Club’s annual Walleye Weekend fishing contest Sept. 22-23. For more information, log on to kneedeepclub.org, or call 973-663-3826.
