The second annual 7 Hills 3 Rivers Adventure Race returns to Rome on Saturday, Sept. 26. “It’s a fun race for CRBI,” said Coosa River Basin Initiative (CRBI) Director Joe Cook.
The race will consist of a four-mile rune, an eight-mile bike race and a three-mile paddle on the Coosa River. The race is designed to give participants a taste of the wilderness in the heart of the city. Racers will climb all seven of Rome’s famous hills and follow paths along all three rivers, Cook said. Teams, of no more than three people, are required to paddle canoes. Individuals, however, may bring their choice of vessels. Registration is still available to people supplying their own canoe or other vessel. Checkpoints will be located along the course. To complete the race without penalty points, all checkpoints must be gathered. Checkpoint locations will include Blossom Hill, Jackson Hill, Oostanaula River at Chieftains Museum, Lumpkin Hill, Myrtle Hill, Mount Aventine, Shorter Hill and Clocktower Hill.
“It will be interesting to watch the bikers go through the Burrell Creek area,” Cook said. “It’s under the flood plain right now.” About 100 participants are expected for the unusual race. “That’s about double of what we had last year,” Cook said.
The race will begin at Ridge Ferry Park at 8 a.m. and last about 3 or 3 ½ hours.
