Rock climbing in Gran Canaria

The rocky, rugged and mountainous landscape of Gran Canaria, along with its consistently warm and sunny climate, makes it an excellent place for non-winter based mountain sports. Rock climbing is a particularly popular sport, and having cottoned on to these uniquely good aspects of this island, many climbers are making their way to Gran Canaria to test themselves against the rock.

The industry has completely taken off on the island now because of this. There are now rock climbing centres, schools and clubs that are dotted all over the island. If you have never climbed before, then, but quite fancy trying your hand at it, then you will certainly not be short of gear, advice or practice. If you need to as well, there will be plenty of excursions designed to introduce new comers safely to the prospect of climbing outdoors on a real mountain.

The incredibly good conditions for climbing are in part due to the unique way in which the volcanic activity formed the rocks of the island. There are vertical faces, gullies, crests, cauldrons, cracks, wedges and huge overhangs; everything any climber has ever dreamed of can be climbed here. The variance also allows for a variance in skill level, as you can be sure to find a route that is just right for you.

The Roque Nublo and Narices (at the base of the north face of Roque Bentayga) are the most visited places for climbers on the island. The first of these is of historical importance due to its status as the first climbing spot to have been set up; and it is also among the best, for it has 12 good routes, and room for increasing the difficulty of your climb. The latter of these, however, is one where you must take care in climbing, for there are certain restrictions due to the fact that it is a place of historical interest.

The whole island has great spots for climbing one, though. But you should check before you start attaching your gear to the rock in case your chosen spot is a site of ecological interest that is required to be left alone; but apart from that issue, this island is the perfect playground for a climber.
