One skier has been seriously injured in an avalanche east of Pemberton, B.C.

The skier was reported to have been in a group of three when the avalanche struck at about 3:30 p.m. PT near Caspar Creek, about 25 kilometres east of Pemberton and about 120 kilometres north of Vancouver.

The injured skier was not buried, but was unable to move and remained on the mountain with one other in the group, according to the CBC News source near the scene.

The third member skied out to get help, but darkness fell shortly after the incident, preventing the use of a helicopter in the rescue, reports said.

“One of them was injured quite badly,” an RCMP spokesman was quoted as saying. “As for the other two, one has made it out to report the incident; the other is remaining with the injured person.”

A decision had not been made by late Thursday whether or not to bring the injured skier out on foot at night or to wait for daylight.

The avalanche hazard has remained high in most areas of British Columbia for several days, thanks to unusually mild temperatures, and numerous warnings have been issued to snowmobilers and skiers to exercise extreme caution in the province's backcountry.

Slides have also caused closures on major routes in recent days.
