After being held up by low visibility Tuesday, Grand Marais adventurer Lonnie Dupre was able to ascend from 9,600 to 11,200 feet on Mount McKinley on Wednesday.
The weather included variable winds and limited visibility during the climb, according to Dupre’s support team. Dupre reported a temperature of 40 below zero outside of his snow cave, which he can keep heated to about 30 degrees above.
If the weather allows, Dupre plans to continue his climb today.
Dupre, 50, is attempting to become the first person to climb the 20,320-foot-tall McKinley — the highest mountain in North America — solo in January. He began his climb Dec. 22 after a plane dropped him off at 7,200 feet. He began his climb carrying and dragging about 130 pounds of gear and food, some of which he is caching in snow caves as he climbs.
Dupre tried climbing McKinley, also known as Denali, last winter, but bad weather prevented him from getting above 17,200 feet.
