The name and condition of an Appalachian Trail hiker who was airlifted out of Pine Grove Furnace State Park Saturday afternoon was unavailable as of press time Sunday night.
Around 4:40 p.m. Saturday, Cumberland County communications dispatched fire and rescue officials to Pine Grove Furnace State Park, Cooke Township, for reports of a male hiker who had fallen, injured himself, was unable to walk and was nearly one mile from the nearest roadway, according to a press release from the Maryland State Police Aviation Command.
The aviation command was called to the scene after EMS personnel arrived at the injured hiker and determined the extent of his injuries.
Once alerted, the call was dispatched to Trooper 3, the Maryland State Police helicopter based in Frederick, Md.
Trooper 5, based in Cumberland, Md., also was dispatched to the scene to assist.
While en route, the helicopter crew learned that Cumberland County communications was requesting the aerial patient removal using Trooper 3’s rescue hoist due to rugged terrain, which was causing a difficult and extensive extrication from the scene. The hiker had suffered leg injuries and there was no alternative means to transport him down from the mountain, the release said.
Using the rescue hoist, a crew member from the helicopter was lowered to the scene along with specialized rescue equipment. Once the hiker was secured in the rescue device, Trooper 3 maintained a hover over an opening in the trees and successfully hoisted the patient into the chopper, according to the press release.
He was then transported to a pre-designated landing zone, where he was transferred to Cumberland County EMS for transport by ambulance to a local hospital.
No other information was available Sunday night. The initial responding agency was Pine Grove State Forest police, and a message left was not returned as of press time.
