Search Continues for Man in Boating Accident
TIME: 02:37PM Tuesday August 28,2012
FROM:kdcountry94.

The search continues today for one of two men involved in a boating accident on Waconda Lake Saturday evening.

One of the two men who went overboard was found yesterday morning by rescue units on the south side of the lake at about 9:00-AM.

According to Mitchell County Sheriff Doug Daugherty, 3-men went fishing Saturday evening. One of the men fell out of the boat, and a second man dove in after him. The third man, who apparently was a late addition to the fishing party, shut the boat’s motor off but couldn’t get it restarted after his companions didn’t return. At that point the remaining man on the boat called 9-1-1for help.

None of the identities of the men have been released by authorities. Sheriff Doug Daugherty did say however, all three were local residents.

Authorities began a search Saturday evening following the emergency call but had to call it off at about midnight because of heavy fog.

Yesterday the Kansas Highway Patrol had an airplane up and divers from Plainville also joined the search which included a large number of volunteers and their boats and personnel from Wildlife and Parks.

The search continued into the evening yesterday with emergency crews shutting down at dark last night.

We will continue our coverage of the boating accident and search for the missing man throughout the day and have an update during the noon news hour.

Noon News

Still in search mode at Waconda Lake as authorities try to locate a man who went overboard on Saturday evening during an evening fishing trip. The man in question has now been missing for nearly 48-hours.

A 2nd man on the boat was found about 9:00-AM yesterday and a 3rd man on the boat was rescued the evening of the incident shortly after placing a 9-1-1 call on his cell phone.

KD Country 94 talked to Mitchell County Sheriff Doug Daugherty at about 11:30 this morning. He told us that there is a lot of misinformation out there concerning the accident. He was particularly upset with information suggesting the boat capsized.

Right now a cadre of volunteers and their boats are patrolling the lake trying to locate the missing man. Unfortunately, the clock is still ticking – the longer the search continues the less likely the end result will be positive.
