CLINTON COUNTY, Ill. (KMOV.com) – The bodies of two men, feared to have drowned following a boating accident, have been recovered from Carlyle Lake.
Recovery efforts on the Illinois lake started early Sunday morning after the men went missing following an apparent boating accident late Saturday night.
The Army Corp of Engineers and Illinois Conservation Police found a one man's body near the train trestle on the lake on Monday. Sgt. Manker with the Illinois Conservation Police Department said the second man's body was found around 7 a.m. on Tuesday, but did not say where in the lake.
The identities of both men have not yet been released, but authorities said one of the men is from Highland, Illinois and the other from Missouri.
On Sunday, investigators told News 4 three men were in a boat on the east side of the lake near the Boulder access area around 10 Saturday night when one of the men went into the water. When he started having trouble staying afloat, a second man jumped in to help. A third man remained in the boat; however the boat was not anchored and may have started to drift.
When the two men failed to surface, the man in the boat went for help.
Authorities said they got the call to respond to the scene around 1 o'clock Sunday morning.
Carlyle Lake is located about 50 miles east of St. Louis in Clinton County, Illinois.
Autopsies will be performed to determine the cause of death for each victim. Investigators expect to release more information, including the identity of the victims later on Tuesday.
