Yesterday, Outside Magazine named Richmond as the number one pick on its list of the "The Best River Towns in America".
The magazine's reasons for choosing Richmond had much to do with the James River Park System, and the work of Ralph White, the park system's longtime manager.
The James River Park System's network of trails provides access to Belle Isle from both sides of the river. Along the south bank, trails lead to Forest Hill Park and the Pony Pasture.
Along the north side of the James, the North Bank Trail connects Pump House Park, Byrd Park, and North Bank Park (home of Texas Beach). The North Bank Trail also leads past historic Hollywood Cemetery and the Oregon Hill neighborhood, and ends next to the American Civil War Center at Tredegar Iron Works.
