The State of New York has many summer hiking trails. In my opinion, some of the best ones are located in the Finger Lakes Region. I like hiking there because of all the waterfalls. With that said, there are five hiking destinations in the region that I consider to be top-notch. Here's a quick rundown on each one:
Buttermilk Falls State Park
Buttermilk Falls State Park is located in Tompkins County. It features over 2 miles of hiking trails and multiple waterfalls. Even though the park's hiking trails are short in mileage, they are long on steep inclines and amazing views. I would suggest that hikers consider taking the Gorge Trail. It is less than a mile long and features an overlook area that offers an excellent view of Buttermilk Falls.
Fillmore Glen State Park
Fillmore Glen State Park is located in Cayuga County. It features more than 4 miles of trails and five waterfalls. I'd recommend that hikers consider taking the 2 mile long Gorge Trail because it is heavily shaded and scenic. It consists of multiple bridges and views of the waterfalls. The only downside is that it can get slippery in spots. Therefore, hikers should wear sturdy hiking boots.
Stony Brook State Park
Stony Brook State Park is located in Livingston County. It features more than 2 miles of challenging trails and three waterfalls. I'd recommend that hikers consider exploring the East Rim Trail. It is slightly over a mile long and connects to the park's other two trails. It can be difficult in spots but offers rewarding views of the waterfalls.
Taughannock Falls State Park
Taughannock Falls State Park is located in Tompkins County. It features over 4 miles of hiking trails and a trio of large waterfalls. I would suggest that stalwart hikers consider taking the 1.5 mile long North Rim Trail. It connects to the South Rim Trail. North Rim Trail highlights include views of the gorge, the waterfalls and a railroad bridge. Hikers looking for a short, easy trek should consider taking the Gorge Trail instead.
Watkins Glen State Park
Watkins Glen State Park is located in Schuyler County. It features miles of jaw-dropping trails and 19 waterfalls. I would definitely recommend that hikers take the 1.3 mile long Gorge Trail. Trail highlights include the Cavern Cascade and Rainbow Falls. The Cavern Cascade and Rainbow Falls are two mammoth waterfalls that you can hike behind. Other trail highlights include a series of plunge pools, Glen Cathedral, the Baptismal Font and the Spiral Gorge.
