Top 5 Summer Hiking Spots Located in New York’s Genesee Region

Are you thinking about going hiking in New York's Genesee Region? If not, you should. The region is home to many superlative, summer hiking spots. Here's a quick rundown on five of them:

Letchworth State Park

Letchworth State Park is located in Livingston County and features over 60 miles of summer hiking trails. Many of the hiking trails are geared towards the stalwart hiker and not recommended for children or the infirm. I'd recommend that hikers with a limited amount of time consider taking the 7 mile long Gorge Trail because it offers incredible views of three waterfalls. I should also mention that it is a dead end trail. Therefore, hikers should be prepared for the trek back to their vehicles. History buffs may want to consider taking the 1.25 mile long St. Helena Trail as well. It leads to the remnants of a once thriving village that was abandoned around 1948 due to frequent flooding.

Darien Lakes State Park

Darien Lakes State Park is located in Genesee County and features over 7 miles of hiking trails. I'd suggest that hikers consider taking the 2 mile long Conservation Trail because it covers a good section of the park. It is also considered part of the Finger Lakes Trail System. The trail is a sweat breaker and can be muddy in spots. Therefore, I'd definitely recommend that hikers wear sturdy footwear when attempting this hike.

Hamlin Beach State Park

Hamlin Beach State Park is located in Monroe County and features 10 miles of summer hiking trails. It is also an excellent spot to engage in a little bird watching. I'd suggest that hikers consider taking the 1 mile long Yanty Creek Nature Trail. It offers superlative opportunities to check out the wildlife that call Yanty Marsh home. It is also shady in spots.

Lakeside Beach State Park

Lakeside Beach State Park is located in Orleans County and features 4 miles of non-strenuous hiking trails. The trails offer nice views of Lake Ontario and ample spots for an impromptu repast. Because swimming is not allowed, the crowds also tend to be light on the weekends.

Silver Lake State Park

Silver Lake State Park is located in Wyoming County and features a handful of trails. Hikers may want to consider taking the 1 mile long Silver Lake Trail. It's an easy trail that offers views of the lake. The lake itself is noteworthy because of the sea serpent legend associated with it. An alleged sea serpent sighting took place there in 1855.

Killeen Gonzalez enjoys summer sports and recreation with her family. She has also traveled extensively.
